Creator Desegregation of Virginia Education (DOVE) Project
Description The DOVE Collection contains materials dated mainly from the early 1950s through the 1960s and 70s. Specific regions represented in the collection are the City of Norfolk, Prince Edward County, Southside Virginia, Charlottesville and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. During a series of tours conducted throughout the state in 2012 and 2013 entitled ‘School Desegregation: Learn, Preserve and Empower,’ nearly 100 oral histories were conducted to allow citizens to talk about their experiences with school desegregation. Photographs, documents, newspaper clippings and other items were also collected at this time and at other times during the DOVE project. Additional material will be added in the future.

Description Served in the General Assembly and as Lieutenant Governor (1971-1973). Unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Virginia three times (1969, 1973,1977). Bulk of the collection deals with his career in politics, first in Norfolk and, after 1968, on the statewide level. Documents Democratic Party affairs from 1948 through 1977. Also includes promotional audio and video clips created as part of Howell’s campaigns for the Virginia governorship in 1969, 1973 and 1977. Included are radio and television advertisements, speeches and scripted television broadcasts.

Also pictured is Dr. Ruth Harrell, chair of the Old Dominion College psychology department and faculty advisor to the sorority, who was the school psychologist for Prince Edward county schools.

Description The Library of Virginia’s WRVA Radio Collection covers three-quarters of a century, from the station’s founding to the end of the twentieth century. It includes a wide array of materials related to the history of WRVA, including incorporation files, memos, meeting minutes, FCC license renewal applications, and newsletters; materials about its programs and listener responses to its programs; information on specific employees and announcers such as Alden Aaroe, Bertha Hewlett, Tim Timberlake, and others; and publications promoting WRVA and the Richmond area market to advertisers. The collection also includes photographs; sound recordings; and numerous other documents and memorabilia items related to the station. The series of sound recordings included in the WRVA collection includes 637 CDs reformatted with funds provided by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. These recordings document an astonishing variety of programs, personalities, and events related to the radio station and its development. Popular musical programs and performers, including the Old Dominion Barn Dance and the Corn Cob Pipe Club, figure prominently in this collection, as do the station’s live reports and commentary on news events of local, state, national, and international significance between the 1930s and 1990s. Numerous special anniversary programs broadcast by the station provide a rich body of information on the station and its history, and feature synopses of important news events covered by WRVA throughout its history.

Armistead Boothe collection, 1920-1983

Creator Boothe, Armistead Leon (1907-1990)
Description Armistead Lloyd Boothe (1907-1990) was a lawyer and state legislator from Alexandria, Virginia. Boothe attended Episcopal High School, the University of Virginia, and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He and his wife, Elizabeth Peele Boothe, were married in 1934.

Boothe served as a Democratic Virginia state legislator from 1948-1963. He was a prominent member of a group of legislators known as the “Young Turks” who opposed the entrenched establishment politicians of Virginia government. As noted in a 1970 news release, “he became perhaps best known for his consistent political fight, from 1954 on, to keep the public schools of the State open” after Virginia threatened to eliminate the mandate for public schools in order to oppose the Supreme Court’s Brown vs. Board of Education decision requiring school integration.

Boothe also served as a trustee of Colonial Williamsburg. A lifelong Episcopalian, he left politics and the law in 1970 to serve as the Director of Development at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Boothe died in 1990.

The collection documents the life and political career of Armistead L. Boothe from his school days in Alexandria, Virginia, in the early 1920s to his role as Director of Development at Virginia Theological Seminary in the 1970s and his retirement in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Included are certificates, a few photos, and a letter from Boothe’s time as a student at Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia, travel and bank documents from his time in England in the 1920s and 1930s, and newspaper articles, speeches and writings, press releases, campaign materials, and correspondence from his days as a lawyer, politician, and director of development at Virginia Theological Seminary. Of particular interest is a 1969 letter to the parents of Mary Jo Kopechne, who was killed in the accident at Chappaquiddick in Ted Kennedy’s car. Also included in the collection are Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia briefs dating from the 1940s to the 1960s, as well as correspondence, agendas, news articles, etc, from Boothe’s role as a trustee of Colonial Williamsburg.
